2018-2019 - The year of individual success and girls wrestling.
The 2018-19 season was a watermark year for girls wrestling in the state of Utah. Cyprus fielded the largest girls team in the state with 9 girls finishing the season. Individual successes abounded for the men's team: Edwin Margarito (106) won the Granite District Tournament and placed at Capitol City and Rockwell Battle of the Brave, Terran Egan (170) won the Capitol City Classic and placed at GSD and Battle of the Brave, and Josef Mecham (195) won the Granite District Tournament and placed at Battle of the Brave. Cyprus placed 3rd in region II with wins over Hillcrest and rival Kearns. Egan and Mecham both finished the season placing 4th in state and were awarded the Sam Nichols and Matt Brown Awards (respectively). The girls wrestling team placed 3rd in state at the USA wrestling girls state championship.
2017-2018 - Defending Champions.
Cyprus entered the 2018-19 season in a new region and classification. Now a 6A school in region 2! Joining Cyprus in the new region was rival Kearns along with Hillcrest, Hunter, and Granger. This season's region championship would be decided only by dual matches. State duals were done away with by the UHSAA. Cyprus would go into this year with many of the key wrestlers from the region title team gone. Newcomers and JV elite wrestlers would make up much of the varsity. Cyprus would have it's first female wrestler this season, a change in district policy allowing for it. Joining the coaching staff were graduate assistants Brian McConaha and Brody Ziemski, replacing coach Fallentine, who joined the US Air Force. Captains for the team were Nathan Searle, Edwin Margarito, and Terran Egan. Cyprus began the season winning the Granite School District Championship, edging Kearns High. Cyprus finished region with a 1-3 mark, defeating rival Kearns at home. Cyprus sent underclassmen Hunter Bown (106), Cayden Quintana (138), Terran Egan (160), Josef Mecham (195), Timber Wolfe (220), and Kaleb Slaugh (285) to state. Nathan Searle was awarded the All-State academic award, Sam Nichols award, Matt Brown award, and captain's award.
2016-2017 - Region Champions!
The 2016-17 season would prove to be one of the best in the history of the team. Cyprus entered the season with most of the previous years varsity wrestlers, and brought back a few wrestlers who took a season off. This year's region championship would be decided in a dual tournament format, with one rivalry dual (vs. Kearns) prior to the tournament. Also, a state dual tournament would be held for all of 4A at one location. Cyprus took 2nd at the GSD Tournament, 3rd at the Sky Hawk Showdown, and 3rd at the Gallegos Memorial. This year would also mark the return on the Magna Mountain Tournament, albeit in a JV-only format, which Cyprus' JV squad won! Cyprus ended the season winning its first ever region title in wrestling, defeating rival Kearns at their gym, and blowing away Murray, Skyline, Olympus, and Hillcrest. Cyprus as a team placed 6th in the state dual tournament; scoring victories over Highland, Woods Cross, and Timpanogos, losing only to #3 Maple Mtn. Ricky Garreaud placed 5th in state at 170 lbs. and was awarded the Sam Nichols Award for an unprecedented second time. Nick Korhonen (132), Taylor Sopko (152), Lopeti Aiolupotea (160), Cody Mecham (182), Omar Campos (195), and Nathan Tracy (220) all qualified for state.
2015-2016 - A huge step forward.
Winning became the new normal during the 2015-16 season. Cyprus joined a new region; joining Murray, Skyline, Olympus, Kearns, and Hillcrest in Region 6. Joining the coaching staff was CHS grad Tyler Fallentine. Cyprus posted region wins over Hillcrest and Murray, pitting them in a state playoff dual match against #1 Box Elder. The team won multipule medals at the Kawa Dual Tournament, Granite School District Tournament, and the Gallegos Memorial Dual Tournament. Nick Korhonen (126), Dylan Herzog (138), Ricky Garreaud (160), and Matthew Hatch (195) all qualified for state. Brody Ziemski won the innagural "Matt Brown Award" given to the Cyprus senior with the most career varsity wins.
2014-2015 - Pirates adapt to changes in Utah wrestling...
Coach Charlie Brown joined the staff, replacing Coach Fallentine. 2015 marked the first year of a divisional tournament to seed state; Nick Korhonen (113) and Brandon Hatch (220) were the only Pirates to qualify for state under the more rigorous format. Brandon Hatch won the Sam Nichols Award and placed 6th at the prestigious "Rockwell Rumble".
2013-2014 - Coach Luttrell joins the Pirates!
Joining new head wrestling Coach Chris Luttrell on the CHS coaching staff were Josh Checketts, Dustin Heath, and (a holdover from the previous staff) Ralph Fallentine. Newcomer C.T. Ulrich won the Sam Nichols award as most outstanding Cyprus wrestler, but was unfortunately unable to wrestle for the state title at 152 lbs. due to an infection. Multiple other Pirates placed at the region tournament, earning a state meet bid: Nick Korhonen (106), Brody Ziemski (126), Bryan McConaha (145), Andre Orantes (170), and Brandon Hatch (195).
2012-2013 - The Swede Robinson Era.
The first and final year of head coach Swede Robinson's tenure at Cyprus before moving on to coach at Highland. This team placed second at the Magna Mountain Invitational, second at the Stallion Stampede, and won the Capitol City Classic. State qualifiers included: Xavier Thomas (106), Michael Shibahara (113), Donze Palmer (120), Matt Merkey (132), Max Bonifacio (138), Jose Banuelos (145), Nico Disera (152), Dallas Garreaud (170), Taylor Fallentine (182), Brandon Hatch (195), and Cesar Reyes (220). Merkey placed 5th and Disera placed 6th at the 4A state meet.
